NBA Draft 2014 Pick 1: Andrew Wiggins, Cleveland Cavaliers

Andrew Wiggins was the 1st overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2014 NBA Draft. Here at SportsFansSpeak we decided to give a rundown on Andrew Wiggins and what impact he will have on the Cavaliers.

Wiggins is a very raw player, he has lots of talent but, he is still developing. His main asset is he is by far the most athletically gifted player in this year's draft. Standing at 6 feet 8 inches he can play both the SG and the SF positions. With his size and quickness he will be a real problem for other NBA teams. As shown below he excels in transition. This is great for the Cavs as they were 3rd in the NBA in miles ran per game. The Cavs love to push the ball and with a back court of Kyrie Irving, Andrew Wiggins, and Dion Waiters you can expect some points to be put on the board.

Another of Wiggins' strengths is his defense. With a wingspan of 6 feet 11 inches and a reach of 8 feet 11 inches, Wiggins can cause a lot of havoc on the defensive end. His quickness and reach allows him to stay in front of smaller guards, block shots, and most importantly with the three-point shot becoming so common in the NBA, closing out on shooters. His lack of bulk will make it a problem if he gets played at the SF position. Although he has enough length and quickness to bother most Small Forwards on the wing he will struggle to defend them in the post.

While Wiggins has an excellent transition game, his outside shooting needs some work. Wiggins shot an average of 34% on three-point shots, whereas the second pick, Jabari Parker, shot 51% from three. With the NBA three being farther back, Wiggins, will struggle unless he works on that aspect of his game. Wiggins has an incredible first step but watching him play at Kansas he seems a little timid to use it. During a lot of his games at Kansas Wiggins just drifts around the three point line looking unsure of what to do. David Blatt, head coach of the Cavs, should be able to get Wiggins moving around with his Princeton offense.

One are Wiggins struggled with during his days with Kansas was his passing. Per 40 minutes Wiggins only averaged 1.9 assists per game. This is something the Cavs need to get better at as they were 21st in the league with 21.2 assists per game. Wiggins also struggle with his turnovers averaging 2.8 per 40 minutes. The Cavs also struggled with turnovers averaging 14.2 a game at 21st in the league.

Overall I think Wiggins is an excellent player with incredible potential. I think he was a great pick by the Cavs and I think David Blatt will help Wiggins become an elite player with his coaching. I believe it will take Wiggins a few years to become an all-star caliber player unless he starts working on his outside shooting early and bulks up soon. Tell us what you think. Was Wiggens the right choice for the Cavs as the first overall pick? What will he amount to in the NBA? What do you want us to talk about next? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. I think Wiggins was a good pick at this position but if I were the Cavs then I would have picked Embiid. Embiid to me fits better in their system and they really need help at the center position. Wiggins is going to be a great athletic player but he needs to develop a better jump shot to stay effective in the league. Keep talking about the draft, I'm excited for all the new young talent in the league!

  2. I think this was a great pick for Cleveland. Kylie Irving is going to run the floor like he does and create the space wiggins will need to find his niche in the nba. Lots of people are questioning the cavs pick because they didn't go with embiid. The cavs are already working with spencer hawed and Anderson varejao. Both are very decent centers in the nba today. I think wiggins is the most exciting player in the draft this year. Anyone that gets a comparison to Lebron James is worth a number one pick in my book all day long. I'm excited to see his development on the court!

    1. Tyler you bring up a great point. Wiggins' success largely depends on Kyrie and how well he can get the ball to Wiggins in transition. I do think Wiggins plays a lot like Gerald Green from the Suns and Green is starting to get better now that he has a consistent three-point shot. His he your pick for rookie of the year?
