NBA Draft 2014 Pick 8: Nik Stauskas, Sacramento Kings

Nik Stauskas was the 8th pick in the NBA 2014 draft by the Sacramento Kings. Stauskas is a very interesting pick by the Kings, Stauskas has a very similar game to Ben McClemore, he's an excellent shooter and a great slasher. Here at SportsFansSpeak we will be breaking down Stauskas' game to see why the Kings would make this pick.

One of Stauskas' greatest strengths is his excellent shooting ability. The kid can light it up. He has range and an unbelievably smooth stroke. His last year at Michigan, Stauskas scored 17.5 pts/game shooting about 47% a game. I'm excited to see a tandem of McClemore and Stauskas lighting teams up from deep. One of his shooting strengths is his ability to spot up and knock it down. He does an incredible job of finding open spots on the floor, once they get him the ball you can expect nothing but net.

Another aspect of Nik's game that impresses me is his wonderful basketball IQ. He seems to always make the right pass at the right time. He does a great job of playing one step ahead of the defense. Something that has really impressed me is his ability to find open teammates. He doesn't pass the ball very often but when he does it always seems to be an assist to one of his teammates. He is a natural when it comes to understanding how the game works. Who wouldn't want this on their team?

Like all NBA players Stauskas has a lot of areas of his game that need improvement. His defensive game needs a lot of work. He always seems to be a step behind his defender, especially when his man drives to the hoop. Him struggling to stay in front of his man in college is going to be a big problem in the NBA where the athletes are faster and stronger. Something else he needs to work on is his athleticism. As a shooting guard he will be expected to make some plays for himself in this league. In college he struggled to get around faster, bigger guards. A lot of length in the paint also caused him to shoot very poorly when he drove into the lane.

Overall I really like Sacramento picking Stauskas in this year's draft. I would really like to see him on the court with players like Ben McClemore and Darren Collison but, the Kings run into the problem of what personnel to put on the floor. With players like Darren Collison, Ben McClemore, Rudy Gay, Jason Terry, and Nik Stauskas there are a lot of players that love to score. I don't know how they will be able to use all of those players' talents when some of them wont be happy if they don't get the minutes they think they deserve. To me it seems like they drafted Stauskas to come off the bench and really add some depth for their team. I can see him becoming a kind of Manu Ginobili type player.
